Star International – Umm Sheif
Star International School Umm Sheif is an established multicultural school that follows the Early Years Foundation Stage and the National Curriculum of England and Wales. Since its doors opened in September 2008, the school community has rapidly grown to include approximately 450 children with ages ranging from 3 to 11 from over 43 different countries.
The atmosphere at Star International Umm Sheif is child focused based on community and family values. The school aims to deliver a high quality educational experience within a fun learning environment that is safe and nurturing for children.
In September 2010 the primary school was built and the school has now welcomed its first intake of secondary school children into Year 7 in September 2011.

Who runs the school?
The school is owned by the STAR Education Group. The board of Star International School (SIS), Dubai in the United Arab Emirates consists of Mrs. Maryam Salahuddin and Dr. Sayed M Khalanthar. They lead the consortium of four schools from their offices in Mirdif.
The Headteacher is Michael Henry, and the senior leadership team consists of Susan Nash, vice principal and head of key stage one, Karen Oliver, head of foundation stage and foundation two teacher, Andrew Price, head of key stage two and assessment/pupil teaching and David Wilson, head of secondary and physical education.

What is the school’s philosophy?
The school’s headteacher says that the school’s vision is that of a learning community with a carefully designed curriculum that has sufficient breadth and depth to cater for the “whole” child. By giving due attention to the development of the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, aesthetic, creative and physical, as well as the academic, the children are encouraged to develop a real appetite for learning that will stay with them for life.
The headteacher adds that, as an international school, there is a commitment to equipping students with the flexible thinking and learning skills so necessary to them taking their place as citizens and life-long learners of the twenty-first century. To be effective this is nurtured within both a national and international perspective so that, while each individual is encouraged to maintain and celebrate their cultural identity, the school will grow as a Community in appreciating and respecting the diversity of the cultures that surround.
What facilities does the school offer?
With colourful, spacious and bright classrooms equipped with interactive whiteboards, computers and internet access, reading corners, indoor play areas, an indoor desert area, outdoor play areas and library the school has plenty to offer. There is also an ICT lab and a Control Technology Lab where the school uses a series of programmable robots: Bee-Bots (a simple robot), Roamer (a more complex robot), MSWLogo (an on screen robot) and Lego Mindstorms (robotics/construction tools). Control Technology allows children to start with simple programming skills and progress to more complex programming languages.
There is also a well equipped library, a primary art room with a range of graphic tools as well as the resources necessary for children to learn modeling, textiles, craft and collage skills. The school’s sports field is used for football, cricket, tag rugby and athletics as well as for P.E lessons and general play. A sports hall with courts for badminton, volleyball, netball, basketball, handball and for gymnastics and Olympic apparatus work is a state-of-the-art facility used for the majority of physical education classes. Two splash pools are currently available for children in the Foundation years and in the extra curricular programme with a 25 metre swimming pool soon to be added.

Make an appointment for your child’s assessment. This is a very informal interview to determine your child’s ability to access the British Curriculum at Star. It may involve a written assessment in literacy and numeracy which varies depending on your child’s age.

List of documents required for admission:
Five passport size photographs (recent).
Two copies of passport, with a valid visa date.
Two copies of Birth Certificate (in English or Arabic)
Original Transfer Certificate / School Leaving Certificate from the previous school. This must be attested by the Ministry of Education if transferred from a school in the GCC region. A Transfer Certificate from schools in Asia, Africa, East Europe and Latin America must be attested by the Ministry of Education, UAE, and by the Ministry of External Affairs in the country of origin / UAE Consulate. Transfer certificates from Europe, America, Canada, Australia or New Zealand need to have a school stamp but does not require attestation. Transfer Certificate Sample Download
Two copies of the most recent school reports (in English or Arabic)
Application form duly completed. The name of the child must be written as per Birth Certificate / passport on all school documents.
