Work in IT is OK, but the hours are long

How long have you been here in Dubai?

This is my second time in Dubai, I lived and worked here for two years and then I went back to India. This time I have been here for just more than two years and I have really settled in properly.

What kind of work do you do and where do you work?

I work in IT and I work with both hardware and software in a large marketing company that has a fairly developed IT department because they are very dependent on data and information technology.

Do you like your job and do you feel comfortable in your position?

Yes I do like my job I have very good colleagues and I am very comfortable if you ask me about what I do every day.  That does not mean that I do not want to grow and improve myself but I don’t see much room for that in the current position that I have.  However I am satisfied with my job with my salary and the life that I have here in Dubai.

What is it that you like about your job, and what you don’t like?

What I like about my job is that I learn something new almost every day I have very good mentors at work who are happy to teach me and show me what to do when I don’t have an answer. What I don’t like is that I have to work very long hours sometimes maybe even 12 to 14 hours a day depending on who needs what kind of IT help. There is a problem with someone with their computer then I cannot just pick up my bag and leave for home unless the problem has been solved so it is a very challenging job in times of long hard hours.

What about your social life are you happy with what you do after you finish work and on the weekends?

Social life in Dubai is what you want it to be. Some very good friends at work always call and set up get-togethers where we can meet either at their place or at restaurants or somewhere else like in a park where we can have a picnic. All that has stopped now for the last few months because of the Covid 19 pandemic but we still are in touch on zoom or some other way and even at work we find a way to just share some moments with our masks on but nonetheless happy.

There are so many places to go to, and new places to visit and even in neighbouring emirates like Abu Dhabi and Sharjah you can do so much to enjoy yourself with friends and family. I myself do not have any direct family here but I do go out with my friends and colleagues and managed to have a good time but all of this before of course the pandemic hit.

What are you doing these days?

The government of the UAE is very proactive and looking at managing the Covid 19 pandemic situation as best as they can and I think that it is our responsibility as residents of this country to follow the stipulated rules and regulations that they have put in place and not to congregate in large numbers, to remember to wear our masks and follow all the hygiene guidelines that are in place. This is not a difficult thing to do I think that we owe it to the community that we live in and the people around us as well as to the government of this country.

So what I am doing these days is to stay in touch with my friends family and colleagues on zoom and WhatsApp phone calls and video calls and make the best of the situation I’ve also been able to go out for a little bit to supermarkets and pick up groceries and food for home, and also order in for Home delivery when I feel like I want to try something different.

I work in IT support meaning I have to deal with all kinds of people in the company around the clock sometimes even call me late at night on my cell phone and ask for a solution.  I don’t think that’s a problem for me but I also feel that some of the positions that are here are challenging. But, I will keep at it, unless I burn out too soon.
